According to the latest data from US Egg Packaging, demand for egg cartons is expected to grow 2.0% per year to $922 million by 2028, and unit volume will grow less than 1% per year to 4.3 billion. Both molded fiber cartons and rigid plastic cartons will see good growth in the future, while demand for EPS foam cartons is expected to decline due to sustainability concerns and increasing restrictions on EPS foam packaging.
Molded fiber is the most common material for egg cartons due to its sustainability, low cost and good cushioning properties. After losing market share to foam and rigid plastic in the past, molded fiber is now gaining market share from plastic competitors. More end users are switching from foam to molded fiber due to sustainability concerns and increasing government regulation on foam use. Molded fiber is also competing more fiercely with rigid plastic in the high-end market due to improved aesthetics and performance of molded fiber cartons.
Rigid plastic is the smallest material type used in egg cartons by unit, but is growing faster than average due to its aesthetic and ease of recycling. In addition, its transparency allows consumers to easily inspect eggs for cracks without opening the package. Rigid plastic is widely used in organic and cage-free eggs, with demand driven primarily by growth in premium egg sales.
